Monday 9th November saw the first round on the 2015/16 Fermon Trophy. It was held at Alto and included the inaugural participation of Silves International GC. The course was extremely challenging following the recent rains with the fairways being very wet and the rough very deep. This was reflected in the scoring which was some of the lowest ever seen in the competition.
It did not look good for SdM in the early stages when two of the first three pairing (Malcolm Cooke/Eileen Groves and Peter & Marja Chapman) did not cover themselves in glory when recording below average scores. However the rest of the team more than made up for them; Colin & Lynn Hynd, Gwynne Jones/Stu Deans both scored a creditable 31 points but the stars of the day were Euan Pyper/Fred Campbell along with Rudi Pyls/Mich Caubergh who both scored 38 points – the equal best scores of the competition. Very good golf in the conditions and all the more creditable given that 3 of them were débutantes.
When all the scores were counted the SdM ended up winning the day with a team score of 164. Joint second were Carvoeiro and Alto with 159, Silves International were fourth (155) and last years winners Vila Sol recorded the lowest score of 151.
Well done team! Next round will be held on December 7th at Gramacho. Anyone interested in being considered for selection should sign up on the club website".
